Kristalle (Terminologia histologica: Granula crystalloidea; englisch: crystals) bestehen aus in regelmäßiger Form aneinandergelagerten Substanzen, oft aus Proteinen, deren Konzentration über der möglichen Löslichkeit war. Dabei spielt auch der pH-Wert eine wichtige Rolle. Elektronenmikroskopisch erkennt man Kristalle an ihrer sehr feinen aber sehr regelmäßigen meist steifigen Struktur. In eosinophilen Granulocyten finden sich in den meisten der Vesikel Kristalle des "major basic proteins". Die Reinke-Kristalle finden sich im Cytoplasma von Leydigschen-Zwischenzellen des Hodens, jedoch nur, wenn dort die Testosteronkonzentration so hoch ist, daß dieses Sexualhormon nicht mehr gelöst werden kann. Auch extrazellulär können Substanzen auskristallisieren, z.B. in Form der Gallensteine oder der, bei älteren Männern ziemlich regelmäßig auftretenden, Prostatasteine. Auch in der Zirbeldrüse und im Plexus choroideus der Ventrikel können sich extrazelluläre Kristalle bilden, die dann als Hirnsand oder Acervulus bezeichnet werden. Bei der Arteriosklerose finden ebenfalls pathologische Kristallisationsvorgänge statt. Bei der Mineralisierung frisch gebildeten Knochens beginnt die Kalziumeinlagerung auch über eine Kristallisation.
